Burford’s Dragon Parade is back!
Join us for a day of our festive fun for all the family.
For the first time since the 1970s, a dragon will be returning to our High Street. The dragon parade was a popular annual event commemorating a famous battle in Burford between King Aethelbald of Mercia and King Cuthred of the West Saxons in AD 752. Many members of the community will remember the days when, as part of school life, they contributed to the making of the dragon.
From 11.30am, Hwitmearum, the Oxfordshire group of Regia Anglorum, a national reenactment group, will be demonstrating skilled crafts of the period in their Living History Village. Tbis will take place in the grounds of the Primary School. The group will demonstrate how combat warriors would have been dressed in armour when preparing to do battle.
At 2.00pm the combat warriors will lead the dragon parade from the recreation ground down the hill after a reenactment of armed combat, as per the original battle.
